About
Founded in 2012 by David Di Duca and Jonty Craig, Between Art and Technology Studio is a chartered architecture practice which has grown into a unique multidisciplinary design team.
We include architects, interior designers, project managers and skilled furniture makers. In addition to our architecture and design studio, we also run a bespoke joinery business. We work on projects at a wide variety of scales and different sectors including designing peoples homes, healthcare interiors, retail spaces and site specific art commissions.
Over the last decade we have designed or extended over 100 homes across London and the surrounding counties; We have designed, fabricated and installed a series of high quality healthcare and commercial interiors; And have delivered a variety of innovative Arts commissions and research projects.
Designing Homes
Many of the houses we work on in London are Victorian properties in need of modernisation. We have also undertaken larger residential projects across the south east of England, including listed buildings, new builds and barn conversions. Through the diversity of our work and our hands on role in the building of many of our projects, we really understand how buildings are made, how to create details that work, and therefore how to design imaginative but feasible designs for our clients.
Embodied carbon, the energy expended to create the materials from which buildings are made and the construction processes of building, is now becoming the focus of sustainable design. Buildings “contain” the carbon created in their production. We always seek to specify the most sustainable materials and energy saving products feasible, and we endeavour not to demolish anything which could be adapted and reused.
Healthcare Interiors
Over recent years we have designed, fabricated and installed a number of unique and award winning healthcare interiors. We are often approached as artists for these projects. Our innovative ideas, clear communication and visualisation skills, and in-house production team means we are much more nimble than most companies delivering healthcare spaces. As a result we proudly believe we have delivered some of the best healthcare interiors projects in recent years, often whilst working within the constraints of challenging budgets and design requirements.
Commercial Spaces
With our in-house project management and bespoke fabrication team, we are able to offer design and build services on some projects. This makes us uniquely placed for retail, restaurant and office interiors where our joined up, extremely efficient team enables us to deliver imaginative and high quality projects on tight deadlines and budgets.
Research and Artworks
As designers we are focussed on details, materials, construction methods and exploring new ideas. But we believe that understanding how people experience, perceive and behave in the places we create is equally important. Arts commissions and small buildings have offered us opportunities to test and explore our ideas and we always seeking opportunities to create innovative spaces, buildings and experiences.
Many of our past arts projects have incorporated technology, we are interested in how spaces can be activated by technology, becoming responsive or interactive to people or the environment. We have a network of friends and collaborators we draw on for these projects and we are always keen to meet and work with new practitioners.
